Back in January I told you about the wonderful food products being produced by Cannon & Cannon British Charcuterie and how they have a restaurant called the Salon located in the Brixton market area. I have since visited the delightful little restaurant which is located above the ground floor deli.
I would describe the place as shabby chic, perhaps a little more on the shabby side than chic, no dressing up required. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere with the walls bare and exposed brickwork in places, wooden counter tops and tables, mismatched tables and chairs etc. The kitchen area is open so that you can see the cooking of all the delicious food taking place. The one negative of this quirky little place was that the chairs where that my partner and I were sitting were not that comfortable, although in saying that we did stay there for over 2 hours.
If you read my previous post on the Cannon & Cannon British Charcuterie you will know that all of their produce has a high animal welfare, sustainability and organic focus supporting traditional British Farming which is just fantastic. This place like many who are seasonally focused provide you with a set dinner menu, subject to dietary requirements made when booking, using produce which is fresh, available and in season on the day. You can if you wish to have selected wines to go with each course, but we just opted for a bottle or two of their own organic red wine which was so delicious we bought another one to go when we left. The food its self was just divine, with interesting beetroot and truffle salads and pork belly served as a main. Now I am not normally a fan of pork at all, I just don’t like the taste of the meat and almost asked for a vegetarian alternative when I saw what the main dish was to be. But I am glad to say that I stuck with it and found the meat to be quite delicious, although I did take off the crisped up belly fat from the top and gave it to my partner who was more than happy to gobble it up for me! The sauce and accompaniments with the meat all married perfectly with each other to make a most scrumptious plate of food. The meat itself was so delicate and soft, I could not fault it at all. After giving our stomachs a small breather, we followed up with a fantastic cheese board, all home produced of course.
So all in all despite some of the furnishings needing some improvement, I would highly recommend this restaurant. After all one goes for the food and not the tables and chairs right?!
