The indulgent treat that is really good for you
Yes it is true, finally you can have your cake and eat it! Oppo is really quite amazing, it has less fat, calories and carbohydrates that sugar than Weight Watchers ice cream! Now I know what you are thinking, healthy ice cream tastes like healthy ice cream right? It lacks creamy goodness and tastes a bit watery and more icy than creamy. Not Oppo.
So what have they done that makes Oppo so different? Well, they replaced sugar and cream with virgin coconut oil and stevia leaf (a completely natural sweetener with zero calories) and boosted each flavour with delicious superfoods like baobab, lucuma and spirulina. The other key ingredient is milk, which of course is organic.
There is a very interesting story behind how Oppo came about. Brothers Charlie and Harry Thuillier were off on a crazy potentially world record making journey traveling 1000 km in air powered kite buggies. The journey was tough when there was no wind and when the boys ran out of food they turned to the wild coconuts and acai berries. This was probably the best thing they could have done as the food not only provided them with more energy than the processed food they had taken with them but it sparked an idea for what was to become a successful delicious really good for you ice cream brand.
The Review
Oppo ice cream is currently available in three different flavours: Vanilla, Salted Caramel and Mint Chocolate.
Having become a lover of salted sweet things of late I tried out a tub of the Salted Caramel with Lucuma. It did not disappoint, when I brought it home my husband was delighted, then I told him it was healthy ice cream to which he looked crestfallen. But, after he had tasted it he said it was the best healthy ice cream he had ever had. Yay!
It does have quite a unique taste, it has a sort of homemade quality, but like a really really good homemade. The flavour lingers in the mouth unlike many other ice creams whose flavour dissipates very quickly. I often avoid caramel sweets as I find them too sugary and often hurting my teeth, not with Oppo’s Salted Caramel. I recall feeling satisfied after eating it and not at all thirsty as I often do with other brands. The texture is definitely creamy though I would say it was a bit lighter than some full fat, made with cream and sugar varieties, but given that it carries a slimline 82 KCals with just 3.2 g of saturated fat in a two scoop serving, I say it is well worth the very marginal trade off. And you’re getting a superfood to boot! This will certainly be my new go to ice cream over any other brand and it will be completely guilt free!
You can find more information on Oppo Ice Cream at their website, learn the theory behind the package design, it’s very clever and of course buy your self a tub or two from Ocado or Waitrose.
