I have now returned from Cumbria having taken with me the most delightful and unique eating experience ever! On Friday the 23rd of November my partner and I dinned at Simon Rogan’s restaurant L’Enclume located in Cartmel Cumbria. As I mentioned before there is no menu, upon arrival there is a sealed envelope on the table which details the 17 courses which we will be presented with that evening.
All of the dishes are made with ingredients sourced locally or grown on Simon’s farm. The menu takes the diner on a delightful and delicious journey like never before. Simon has done a fine job of bringing scientific molecular cooking back to basics with the best natural organic home grown ingredients highlighting their flavours and textures into the most exquisite food party in the mouth. I can only describe each plate as scientific art, and to taste it is heaven. Each mouthful is as light and fluffy as a cloud with one delicious flavour followed by another.
The ambience is very warm and welcoming and not pretentious in any way at all as can sometimes be the case with up market venues. The white wash stone walls with low ceilings and exposed beams are not out of place in this country village. Even the crockery and cutlery are in tune with the surroundings and the food which is served within them. My favourite being the antler horn handled steak knives. The staff are equally knowledgeable and work efficiently as a team while being friendly and tentative to their customers.
I would certainly put this on a “must do” list, it is just such an experience like no other, and I have dined in quite a number fine high class restaurants, this comes second to none, and in my opinion is leaps and bounds in front of any other. If you really can’t be bothered to travel to Cumbria do try Simon’s Roganic pop up restaurant in Marylebone which will be around until summer 2013, with plans for a permanent residence forthcoming in Mayfair. Simon also tells me that he plans to open more restaurants in the north of England including Manchester.
The only trouble is, I fear our wedding diner will just not be up to scratch!
