As I have previously mentioned I like to attend food trade shows on the look out for great new food products coming on the scene and not in the supermarket foods. One such finds from the Speciality food show earlier this year which I sampled was Protlebay’s hand popped in Devon kracklecorn. This is the best popcorn I have ever tasted!
Portlebay have five different flavours available and all are made with real ingredients, I think that is what makes the real difference in taste and the fact that they are made with raw cane sugar which helps to give them that perfect crunchy texture. The five flavours available are Salty Sweet, Crispy Bacon & Maple Syrup, Orchard Wood Smoked Cheddar, Wasabi & Sweet Ginger and Chilli & Lime. It is so hard to pick a favourite, they are all so good! Classic salty sweet is always a delight and an expected flavour in the popcorn stakes and the cheese one tastes just like my favourite cheddar cheese which I buy from the deli counter. I was pleasantly surprised by the Wasabi flavour, I was expecting a lot of heat like the wasabi nuts you buy in bars, I think the sugar must soften it out. The flavour is delicate and light which is perfect for popcorn. The one with the most kick is the chilli flavour, although it would be suitable even for those with delicate palates, it has a touch of heat on initial crunch but it quickly dissipates. And finally the bacon & maple syrup flavour, upon opening I was hit with the smell of maple syrup and this flavour prevails on munching with smokey salty after tones of the bacon.
This range of scrumptious high quality, hand made popcorn is healthy too, well as healthy as popcorn gets anyway, it is made with wholegrain and therefore naturally high in fiber. Who needs Albran when you can have Kracklecorn! So if you are looking for something a little bit special to serve at your Christmas party this year give Portlebay kracklecorn a go, I am certain it will be a big hit.
I did a quick search to see where they could be purchased from and Tesco came up but they seem to be out of stock, flew straight off the shelves I imagine. But worry not you can also order from these guys: DW Holly and are expected to be found in Waitrose soon. If you would like to know more about Portlebay you can find their website here and links to their social media pages.
